How to Build a Wardrobe: The Fundamentals of an Outfit

Hey Fashion Lurkers,

Are you new to fashion and want to start a new wardrobe but don't know how?
Let me help you....

  1. You need BASICS. Basics are articles of clothing that are the foundation of your look. Basics go with everything. Basics come in the colors of black, white, gray, and khaki. Think about neutrals when you think of basics for your wardrobe. If you start with these you will be able to mix and match different outfits. Example: tees and tanks, cardigans, pants, slacks, blazers, etc. *Basics are also Classic pieces too.
  2. You need Jeans. Make sure you find the best style of denim for your body type. Good fit equals a flattering look. If you find that a certain brand of jean fits you well, stick with it and be brand loyal. However, still be open to other brands.
  3. Add Color. Start buying pieces that add that pop of color to your wardrobe. Such as a red blazer or pants or colored denim. Buy accessories with different colors in them.
  4. Add Prints. You can start with basic prints first like leopard and stripes. Those 2 prints go with everything. You can even mix the two. Florals, tie dye, polka dots, abstract prints and etc can be more complex when mixing but can definitely be done. But these are all good prints to start with.
  5. TRENDS. Trends are any type of fad that the fashion industry is obsessed with for the time being. Examples: denim head to toe, floral print motifs, metallics, polka dots, mixing prints, monochromatic color schemes head to toe, suede in the summer, patent leather in the summer, white, black and white, studs and spikes, etc. Trends come and go. Sometimes they stay a while and other times they only last a season.

Get the Look: From SCRATCH by sewing it Yourself

Hey Fashion Lurkers,

My cousins b-day is coming up and she wanted a swimsuit for her upcoming Vegas trip. My cousin is a fabulous curvy girl who took a liking to the retro high waist trend swimwear. She wanted the Rue 107 Iggy swimsuit in blue (top-$25 bottom-$55).

Well, I got bills so that was out of budget.
So, I went to Hancock Fabrics and found the same print fabric that is on the original Iggy from Rue 107. Long story short, I made my cousin the exact replica of the Iggy swimsuit. If you can sew you can save a lot of money if your pocket is tight. Remember* fashion is not about price but about how you piece things together.

The one I made is on the left and the original on the right.

Rashidah Ali's Shoe Line Encore: Fyre or Failed?

Hey Fashion Lurkers,

I want to talk to you guys about Rashidah's shoe line, Encore. The Rashidah I'm referring to is the raspy voice red head who is from Love & Hip Hop New York season 3. She is best friends with Joe Budden's lost love, Tahiry.

(Rashidah above)
Now, Rashidah has been labeled as a woman with a fraudulent past and I see why. Ok, my lurkers I'm not trying to throw shade on Ms. Ali BUT, home girl shoe line is pulling a Go Jane. She has knocked off every high end designer with her shoe silhouette choices and has the nerve to charge $200 plus. NO Ma'am! Not for a knock off. Her shoe line is nice but it's not original, and that's that shit I don't like. Give me something new to look at... Giuseppe already produced half of her line seasons ago. So, why would the consumer pay $200 for a knock off shoe that they can get from Go Jane.com for $24?  However, Rashidah will trick the ones who don't know any better. But this red headed schemer won't get me.

Sorry, Rashidah but you know the consequences of plagiarism... ZERO!  So for that, You Failed.

What to Wear to a Rap Concert???

Hey Fashion Lurkers,

There are many concerts coming up and I recently went to a Brandy concert last Friday where I was dressed in a bodycon dress and heels. Now, there is nothing wrong with this look however, I regret the choice of shoes. I wore a pair of heels that were open toed and of coarse it's hot so my feet were sweating and sliding.

So, I'm going to give you some tips for What to wear to a Rap Concert. These concerts usually have the most energy and sometimes no seating so, your feet must be comfortable but you must remain cute and fashionable.

Tips

  1. Wear comfortable shoes like wegdes, sneakers, or a thick platform with a chucky heel. These types of shoes are more supportive then a stiletto and sturdy. There may be pushing in the crowd.
  2. Wear a comfy outfit too... stick to a look that is easy to move in and/or breathable (fabric). It will be hot so dress like your going to the club to DANCE.
  3. Wear a hairstyle that you dont mind sweating out. When all fails, wear a bun.
  4. Dont wear a big purse...try a small chain bag or no bag at all. You want to be as light as possible.
  5. Lastly, have fun and enjoy the show!

2013 Sunglass Trends

Hey Fashion Lurkers,

So my girl Chrissy from the 1st & 2nd season of Love and Hip Hop New York was rocking these $700 Dita-Mach sunglasses on Instagram along side with her boo Jimmy.

I caught wind of this from Fashion Bomb Daily and when I seen that price I "jumped" back from the computer. LOL Anyway, I was inspired to give you guys a trend update on sunglasses for 2013 (I would have done a "get the look" but no luck in finding a knockoff in these beauties...YET).

The overall trend for shades is the "Retro Trend" and is then broken down into different silhouettes and prints/colors.
