New Years Resolution: Switching up your Style (tips)

Since this is a new year, some people may want to switch up their style for 2012. If you don't have a clue where to begin this should help you get a start on things.

First, Don't ever feel like you have to be "matchy-matchy" to look well put together in an outfit. A lot of people get this mistaken and go over board with matching colors and themes. To much matching will make your outfit look like you were over thinking it, aka COUNTRY!

Remember:
  • Less is more and it's ok to be simple if you are nervous about mixing patterns.
  • Animal prints are a neutral (leopard, tiger, zebra, snake).
  • Mixing patterns are ok, it just depends on how you do it.
  • Accessories are one of  the best ways to make an outfit pop.

The example below will give you a visual.

Do's & Don'ts

Basic Piece- Articles of clothing that will pair up with anything in your closet to help make an outfit.
Your closet should have a nice balance of Basic Pieces like  a blazer, cardigan, blouse, etc. Your basic pieces should be mostly neutral colors that go with everything. This will make it easier to mix and match and pair up different outfits.

Basic List
  1. Blazer
  2. Cardigan
  3. Blouse or Button Down
  4. T-Shirt
  5. Tank top
  6. Dark Denim Jeans
  7. Black leggings
  8. Shoes (heels and flats)
  9. Scarf
  10. Skirt
  11. Pants/Trousers

Rihanna is wearing a plain cream blouse with jeans and a nude heel. She is wearing mosty basics with a statement clutch.

Statement Piece- Articles of clothing and accessories that stand out and become the focal point of an outfit.

Your statement pieces should be loud and bold. For example, When you go to mall and see a garment/accessory and say to your self "I don't have anything to wear with this," this item is probably a statement piece. Statement pieces are unique and don't necessarily match up with everything. You have to build an outfit around  this piece if you want it to be the focal point of your look.
